Movie Review
Gangaram (Pankaj Tripathi) is the sarpanch of Jhundao village that needs government help because wild animals destroy their fields. His encounter with a bureaucrat yields nothing but a list of forms to be filled and certificates to be acquired from other departments. Gangaram is illiterate and ignorant — in this day and age, he has never encountered a cell phone or seen a computer. The absurdist life-and-death drama that ensues is punctuated with doses of dark humour and an empathy for the plight of the poor who are left to their own devices in the face of insuperable odds. The film shifts from the sardonic in the first half to the pop-philosophical in the second before winding up in a courtroom where the legal arguments seek to separate the grain from the chaff.
Srijit Mukherji’s film is based on real-life reported incidents from 2017 in the Pilibhit region, where desperate elders of the village would ‘volunteer’ to get mauled by tigers, so that their families can collect the compensation. A fertile premise on its own, Mukherji’s film might remind a few of Peepli Live. While Anusha Rizvi’s 2010 film still qualifies as a biting satire on poverty in rural areas, Mukherji’s follow-up is mostly toothless with a spark here and there.
Writer-director Srijit Mukherji attempts to mount a satire about the human-animal conflict is about as successful as the exertions of Gangaram (Tripathi) to become a tiger’s lunch. As the sarpanch of a village on the edge of a tiger reserve, Gangaram is saddened by the frequent destruction of the harvest by marauding animals. The local bureaucracy’s apathy towards the situation inspires Gangaram to offer himself up for sacrifice.
Pankaj Tripathi is the day saver here. He’s pitch-perfect as Gangaram. Neeraj Kabi as poacher Jim comes a close second, and one would have loved to see more of him. Their exchanges in the jungle bring out so much about the man-animal conflict, poverty and greed, and a few other pertinent subjects that you wonder why this didn’t start a little earlier in the runtime. Sayani Gupta lends able support in her limited screen-time. There’s precious little for the other supporting actors to do.
